New TV

2006.09.24 - Sunday

I finally bit the bullet and bought a new tv, the Westinghouse LVM-47w1.

This "tv" is actually a monitor, since it has no tuners, NTSC or otherwise. I did a ton of research online at AVS Forum before the purchase and it was well worth the time spent. Since I want to use this screen as my primary PC monitor, it turns out that the Westinghouse was really one of the only choices at this time, since it will display every pixel of a 1920x1080 PC signal. Other screens from Sony and Samsung currently overscan the image, and considering the Sony models in particular are nearly double the price, it was an easy choice. I still got the extended warranty however, and in fact the first unit I brought home had two bright purple stuck pixels. If you're going to buy a large screen, be sure to test it in the store before bothering to take it home.

So far the tv has been great. Image quality is excellent, though I've yet to use it as a PC monitor extensively, so I've only been watching standard def DVDs. The only downside to having a widescreen tv is having to watch 4:3 format shows with black bars on the sides. I know I could stretch it out, but I just can't get used to seeing the Enterprise or the Shuttle or people' figures looking too wide and too short. Black bars it is.

Hopefully I can get the PC working soon enough, as soon as I get a better coffee table and a wireless keyboard and mouse. It should work well.

CBC Liberal Bias, Caught Red Handed

2006.09.01 - Friday

Ridiculous. I suppose I should point out that the CBC offered "regret" over this piece, but naturally stopped short of an apology. Regretting something isn't the same as being sorry, and I'm sure the only thing they're truly sorry over is getting busted. Why is this blatant case of biased, editorialized reporting only being pointed out by an online blog site? Where is CTV or Global? Reporters should be pouncing on each other's mistakes and prejudices, not self-censoring simply because the truth didn't gel with their own personal political stances. These people are supposed to be reporters, not film makers, and they're supposed to be providing the public with facts, not drama.

Disgusting.
